Joe - Night Shot

I've been feeling like a failure lately. But what else can you do but try to be creative. This is me trying to be creative. And me trying to get out of this rut.

Hope you guys like.

Tiffany's Night Shot

Once again, I'm super late in posting my photo. I took this night shot on my recent Vegas trip. It's from the top level of a shopping center parking garage, which I realized, provides a pretty snazzy view of the part of the Strip.

Ubay - Night Shot

Whoops, I completely blanked on this one. Maybe I should program these deadlines into my Google Calendar...

Anyways, I was planning on uploading one very similar to Matt's Picasso vendor, but I thought I'd mix it up. This steel drummer played outside the International Market Place in Waikiki, and his shirt lit up like the bars on an audio monitor. (I just tried Googling it, but I came up with nothing. So if you someone can educate my ignorance of musical and audio devices, it'd be much appreciated.) I found this guy the most legitimately entertaining street performer on the block, so I gave him a dollar for dealing with the constant shutter clicks.

Matt's Night Shot

I know we've all been busy and missed the deadline (worst journalists' ever!), but that doesn't mean we should give up!

I grabbed this shot on a field trip into Waikiki with Tiff and Jason. I can't imagine a street vendor more out of place than this one, especially since the majority of them are further down the street in the International Market Place.

Joe - Circle Shot

Sorry it took so long to post this. Been very distracted. It’s my guitar’s sound hole. The bracing aligns perfectly with the strings in this shot.

Night Shot! (Challenge No. 7)

Hello Everyone! Our next photo assignment will capture nocturnal splendors. It doesn't matter what the photo is of—it could be a feral cat with glowing eyes or a drunk guy in Chinatown—the only requirement is that it is taken after the sun goes down. This photo is due Monday, June 14 (which is also the day Matt was born...) Good luck!

Ubay - Circle Shot

It seems like circles was a bit of a challenge. Hell, I'm not sure if this is a "perfect" circle, but it looks round nonetheless. Spotted at Kakaako Waterfront Park, across from John Dominis.

Circle shot!

Freeze! Have you ever been walking in Waikiki and handed a piece of paper? I know what the next thought is: "Where is the nearest trash can?"

I was able to sneak up behind this guy, and get some revenge!

Tiffany's Tardy Line Shot

Sorry guys, this photo is quite late. But I am posting one today nonetheless! I took this one at the KCC Farmer's Market. This might not be what you could call a traditional line shot, but the linear quality of the veggie stalks caught my eye. Maybe you'll agree...

Tiffany's Circles

I took this photo during the Spam Jam (which was quite delicious by the way). I found this shot while walking through the International Market Place. A man was trying to sell these colorful, spinning wind chimes to tourists as they meandered by.

Photo Challenge #6, Circle(s)

OK everyone, the next challenge is a circle, or circles. I'm talking perfect circles, so no ovals or other round objects. The most obvious one will be a wheel, but let's go out there and explore! Deadline: Sunday, May 9.

Ubay's Line Photo(s)

Not only is my submission late, it's also crap. Jeez, this photography stuff takes some time, effort and sobriety.

This is the window by my cubicle. I noticed the lines of the blinds about 2 weeks ago, and finally took a photo of it today.

I went to a wedding last weekend and this is the ceiling of the hall/garage we were in. Looking at it now, I should probably crop it, but I'm lazy.

Joe's Lines Photo

I shot this last week and was pretty satisfied when I did. I just held on to it till now so I could sift through all of them. It’s the crosswalks near the Advertiser building.

Matt's Lines

I found this one by accidentally taking a shot while checking my lens for smudges. I looked up to see what I had shot, and saw the only beautiful part of the legislature: the ceiling. It opens up to the sky with some awesome lines that draw your eye into the clouds.

Photo Challenge #5, Lines

Hey all,

Wow, our little project is coming along really well. I'm glad to see we're all so motivated to use our cameras more.

This week's challenge is a two-parter:

1) Focus on finding lines for your shot this week. Windows on a building, grout in tiles or whatever strikes you as a good representation of lines. Also, see if you can incorporate anything from our past challenges into these photos, like texture and color.

2) Sign up to follow our blog. It would be kinda cool to build up a following for our blog, plus we would know when someone posted a shot.

Don't forget to put your photo info with your shots, too (ISO, f-stop, etc.), and keep commenting on each others photos. This is the only way we're going to get better at shooting!

Joe's Texture Photo

Alright, sorry it took so long but here it is. My bike was dead last week, so I walked to work. I brought along the camera and took this. And yes, Matt, water counts as texture.

Matt's Texture shot

Does water count as a texture? While trying to catch some rain droplet shots at a high shutter speed, I grabbed this one of the railing of my lanai.

Ubay's Texture Photo

Sorry folks, no tsunami texture photo. But how did I get this photo? For some reason, I was walking barefoot on gravel. Then I looked down and thought, "Hey, this could make a nice texture shot." And there you go.

Tiffany's Texture Shot

This is part of the aging fence that surrounds the Iolani Palace grounds. The rust and the ornate shapes on this post caught my eye and I went in for a closer look. Did you know that the palace used to have manicured gardens? I just learned that—and thought I'd share.

Challange #4: Texture

This week's challenge is on TEXTURE! Oh shnap! Flashbacks of intro to photog. This is what it's about: it can be of anything as long as some sort of texture (rough, smooth, contrasting textures of shadow and light, etc.) takes up 50% of the pic. So get in close to your subjects and show us what they're made of. You don't have to get in close. I just wanted to sound clever.

Joe's Red Photo

I was trying to be economical and shoot around the apartment again because my laziness is a disease. After many failed attempts at capturing color, especially red, I came up with this. It's the inside of my BRAIN. I used a macro lens … Alright, I'm kidding. It's just a photo of my roommate's knitted blanket.

Tiffany's Shot of Red

This red lei hanging from the wrist of Queen Liliuokalani caught my eye walking to work one morning. This statue stands in the front of the state capitol and is adorned with lei on a regular basis.

Weekly Challenge #3

This week's shot is all about color! And the color is red. It can be whatever catches your eye as long as something red is the focal point. So get creative, amazing colors are all around us, just sitting there, waiting for you and your camera. The due date is Tues., Feb. 16.

Ubay - Frame Shot

Sorry for the lateness but here it is. Since I didn't really make any time for this shot, I just brought my camera along to my visit to MA'O Farms today. And, by golly, I said I needed a framed shot and there it was! (It's the law of attraction, I've been informed.) It's framed in a window that is constructed of hay and mud. It's in an organic farm. But there's a big excavator! And someone's elbow, but never mind that.

Exposure: f/16
Shutter Speed: 1/200

Joe - Frame Shot

Finally. It's about time I turned something in. I didn't travel around much with my camera. So I shot around my apartment. This is my roommate, Matt, as seen through his shelves.

Matt's Frame Shot

This was a hard one, but I think I was able to get a few good ones; this being one of them. I've seen this entry way a few times on my travels along this road by my house, and always wanted to get a great picture of it.

Tiffany's Frame Shots

I'm going to post two this week. The first was taken walking around the neighborhood where I live in Makiki. The first is of a car window that caught my eye. The window frames the reflection of the apartment building behind it. I liked the cracked leather of this old car and if you look carefully the window is covered in post office stickers.

The second photo I took a while back but it's one of my favorite frame shots. This was taken at the Byodo-In Temple in Kaneohe. And let's face it, this place is picture perfect!

This Week's Challenge - week of Jan. 18

This week's secret ingredient is: the framed shot! I'm thinking of capturing an image inside a material frame, like shooting a bicyclist through a chain link fence or a portrait of someone standing in a doorway.

Tiffany's Self-Portrait

For my self-portrait I chose to be in front of our bookshelf (which used to be Jason's!). I'm a total book warm, I've loved to read for as long as I've been able to read. I've read most of the books behind me, and I'm holding one of my favorites, The Bell Jar by Cynthia Plath. You might also notice the rings and necklace. I am a jewelry fanatic and frequently hunt for unique pieces.

Matt's Self Portrait

It's hard for me to define myself as just one thing – I'm Jewish, a journalist, salesman, boyfriend, son, etc. But it's easy for me to establish the longest running theme I've had in my life: musician. The songs I write aren't normally very happy, so I thought the darkness and shadows would help bring that out visually.

ISO: 100
Exposure: F/4
Shutter Speed: 1/10
Focal Length: 17mm

Joe - Self-portrait

I'm hardly a serious guy in front of others. But when I take pictures of myself, I always look so damn serious. So what better way to show both sides of my personality with the portrait above. Serious, but not. This was taken in the Honolulu Advertiser newsroom. There's at least three elements in this shot that represents me: jokes, comic strips and news.

Ubay - Self Portraits

I know you said one, but I'm putting in two.

This is me being creepy. I put the camera on a towel on my bookshelf, and aimed it downward. I auto-focused from there, hoping it would focus on something near where I would be sitting. I set the timer, then sat down. I realize I should've had the screen on Facebook or Google. Shot at ISO 400, 1/15 sec exposure at f/4.0

I'm looking at the man in the mirror. I'm asking him to change his ways. This is on the way to the Taj Mahal in the back of an autorickshaw. I saw myself in the mirror and thought, "Hey, I can make this work." Shot at ISO 400, 1/400 sec exposure at f/6.3
